[영어 서수의 기본] 언제 어떻게 사용해야 할까요? - 영어 숫자 서수 읽는 법

영어 서수 ordinal number 는 주로 날짜, 달력, 층수, 분수 분모, 인물 1세, 인물 2세 등을 말할 때 자주 사용합니다.

서수는 기수와 다르게 크기를 나타내지 않고 순서를 나타낼 때 사용합니다.

예시) 첫번째, 두번째, 세번째. . . . . . .
1st, 2nd, 3rd. . . . . . .(읽을 때는 first, second, third)

예시) 2013년 7월 13일
July 13th, 2013 (읽을 때는 July the thirteenth, twenty thirteen)

예시) 루이 13세
LOUIS XIII (읽을 때는 Louis the Thirteenth)

기수 cardinal number - 하나, 둘, 셋, 넷처럼 숫자를 세는 수이며 개수를 셀 때 사용

서수 ordinal number - 첫째, 둘째, 셋째처럼 순서를 세는 수이며 순서나 위치를 나타낼 때 사용



⬛ 그럼 영어 서수를 읽어 보겠습니다.

서수는 기수+th y로 끝나는 기수에는 y를 빼고 ie + th ex) twenty-> twentieth ve로 끝나는 기수를 ve를 빼고 f + th ex) twelve ->twelfth

하지만 모든 숫자에 이 규칙이 적용되는 것은 아닙니다.

first, second, third

❈ 주의 - nine은 마지막 e를 빼고 ninth로 

❈ 주의 - eight는 eightth가 아니라 eighth
